New York, NY – In one of the most violent public shootings in Manhattan this year, Shane Tamura, a 39-year-old former professional athlete, was arrested late Monday afternoon after allegedly killing four people and injuring three others in a shocking shooting near the busy Chelsea district.
What Happened
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the shooting began around 4:45 PM on West 26th Street near 7th Avenue, a densely populated area filled with restaurants, co-working spaces, and residential buildings. Eyewitnesses described a sudden outbreak of gunfire that lasted approximately 30 seconds, causing chaos as people ran for cover.
Authorities say Tamura fired at least 12 rounds from a semi-automatic pistol, striking multiple people at close range. Three individuals died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries shortly after arriving at Bellevue Hospital.
Eyewitness Account
“I was across the street when it happened,” said local barista Marie Alvarez, 27. “It was terrifying. People were screaming, dropping coffee, phones, bags—everyone just ran.”
Video footage obtained from security cameras shows Tamura pacing outside a deli moments before the shooting began. He appeared agitated and was reportedly engaged in a verbal altercation with one of the victims.
Who Is Shane Tamura?
Shane Tamura, originally from San Jose, California, was a former linebacker who played briefly in the National Football League between 2010 and 2012. After retiring from professional sports, he transitioned into motivational speaking and podcasting, hosting a short-lived YouTube series on mental strength and athletic identity.
Over the past five years, Tamura had largely retreated from public life. Former colleagues said he battled depression, financial hardship, and paranoia. Court records indicate that Tamura had been the subject of two previous wellness checks in 2023 and 2024, though he was never charged with any criminal activity before now.
“He was intense, but we never expected this,” said former teammate Jerome Collins. “It’s heartbreaking to hear what happened.”
Victims Identified
As of this morning, police have identified the four deceased victims:
- Elijah Torres, 45 – A construction supervisor from Queens.
- Samantha Li, 33 – A graphic designer who lived in the Chelsea neighborhood.
- David Kaplan, 62 – A retired schoolteacher and long-time resident of the area.
- Keon Branch, 29 – A delivery cyclist caught in the crossfire.
Three additional individuals, whose names have not been released, are currently hospitalized. One remains in critical condition.
Motive Still Unclear
Police are still investigating the motive. Initial evidence suggests that Tamura may have targeted Elijah Torres, who was seen arguing with him just moments before the attack. Detectives have recovered a journal from Tamura’s apartment in Brooklyn that contains entries referencing “betrayal,” “surveillance,” and “mental collapse.”
“We are treating this as an isolated incident at this time,” said NYPD Commissioner Daniela Cruz. “There is no evidence of additional suspects, but we are pursuing all leads.”
Arrest and Charges
Tamura was apprehended just seven minutes after the shooting by officers who were nearby responding to an unrelated call. According to arresting officers, he dropped the weapon without resistance but said, “It had to be done,” during detainment.
He has been charged with:
- Four counts of first-degree murder
- Three counts of attempted murder
- Illegal possession of a firearm
- Endangering public safety
He is currently being held at Rikers Island without bail. His court arraignment is scheduled for August 1, 2025.
Mental Health Concerns
In the wake of the shooting, attention is turning once again to the issue of untreated mental illness among former professional athletes. Tamura had previously spoken publicly about anxiety, anger issues, and insomnia following his football career.
A 2022 report by the National Institute of Mental Wellness in Sports highlighted rising mental health struggles among retired players, particularly those with a history of concussions or traumatic brain injury.
“This tragedy is a failure of multiple systems,” said Dr. Helen Rose, a psychiatrist specializing in trauma and aggression. “Shane Tamura showed signs of declining mental health. The warning signs were there, but the support wasn’t.”
Public and Official Response
New York City Mayor Jonah Freeman issued a statement Tuesday morning, calling the incident “a horrific example of how mental health, violence, and community safety intersect.”
“Our city mourns the loss of four innocent lives. We also recognize the growing burden of untreated trauma and the urgent need for systems that protect the public without stigmatizing those who need help.”
The NFL Alumni Association and the Players Mental Health Coalition both expressed condolences and called for deeper investment in post-career support programs for athletes.
Gun Used in the Attack
Preliminary ballistics analysis shows the firearm used was a Glock 19, purchased legally in Pennsylvania in 2021. Investigators are examining how Tamura transported the weapon into New York City, where strict gun laws prohibit possession of such firearms without a permit.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the weapon was registered to Tamura or if someone else had purchased it on his behalf.
Community Reaction
The Chelsea neighborhood remains shaken. A candlelight vigil is being planned for Thursday evening at Hudson Park, just blocks from the scene of the shooting.
“We don’t know why this happened,” said local community leader Angela Mendez, “but we’re not going to let this tragedy define our neighborhood. We will stand together.”
